FREEDOM FROM SIN
“Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin. If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.”(JOHN 8:31-32, 34, 36)
The issue of whether or not a person can be free from sin is one that is increasingly attracting unwarranted debate in the world today, even among Christians. Whereas, a careful reading of the Bible will clearly reveal that the main purpose of Christ`s coming to the world was to set men free from sin. To state that it is impossible for men to be free from sin is to nullify the purpose of Christ`s coming into the world and to make the sacrifice on Calvary worthless and of no effect. To accept the impossibility of freedom from sin is to frustrate the whole process and essence in seeking God, going to church and reading the Bible. All these are God ordained processes primarily meant to help men attain and retain victory over the Devil and sin.
The scripture leaves no one in doubt as to whom those who are living in sin belong.
“He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.”(1 John 3:8).
The manifestation of Christ anytime anywhere is to destroy the works of the Devil (Sin inclusive). Accepting that one cannot be free from sin is to bar the gates of heaven against oneself and others. It is to make a mockery of God`s word such as these
“But Jesus beheld them, and said unto them, With men this is impossible; but with God all things are possible .Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are possible to him that believeth.” (Mathew 19:26, Mark 9:23) “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” (Philippians 4:13)
Testimonies abound of people (both in Bible days and contemporary times) who have sought for and found this freedom.
“And the LORD said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen RIGHTEOUS before me in this generation.”(Genesis 7:1), “There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abia: and his wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth. And they were both righteous before God, walking in all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord BLAMELESS.” (Luke 1:5,6)
You can be free. If you seek and follow the path to freedom, you will be free.
Suppose a man contacts a deadly disease and everyone around him keeps telling him that the disease is incurable. If it were you, what would you do? I seriously believe that in spite of all said and done, such a person will not resign to fate. He will continue to search for a remedy. He will need two things: one, information; two, Association. The path that leads to success and breakthrough in life passes through these two major milestones. One, you will need all information you can find about the disease and what experts are saying about cure. Two, you will need to associate with those who have also contacted the disease and have recovered (provided in your search, you come across books or persons whose testimony points in the direction of complete cure and total recovery) Sin is the most deadly
disease ever to be found in the world. A man may die in his sickness and still end up in heaven if his sins have been forgiven but not if he dies in sin
1. Information about Sin
From the Greek word translated “sin”, five descriptions or definitions of sin are possible:
One, lawlessness (iniquity) – This is to Live without restraints or self control. It is to Live as if there is no God, no law and no Bible. It is to live in flagrant disobedience to the commandments of God.
Two, transgression: Stepping across the line of God`s approved boundary for life and conduct.
Three: slipping, sliding, falling; it is to lose balance, and break the restraints of the Spirit and dictates of good and clear conscience in conduct, thought, appetite, and expression of affection and desires.
Four, missing the mark: To miss the mark of God`s required standard and commandment, Setting aside God`s standard. The act committed by people and blasphemously regarded as `the eleventh commandment.
“ Ye shall not do after all the things that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right in his own eyes.”Deuteronomy 12:8.
Five, Debt: As taught by Christ in “the Lord`s prayer”, a sinner is indebted to God and he is a debtor to humanity who have been hurt or injured by his sins. The records of your sins exists before God. They are actually records of your debts which you can either choose to have remitted in the world now by faith in the blood of Christ or give account of in eternity. Time or religious activities will not hide your sins. A photograph once taken remains until somebody does something about it.
Examples of sin include backbiting, whispering, adultery, fornication, uncleanliness (in language, masturbation and pornography), hatred, variance, envy, jealousy, murder(including abortion) malice, revelling(party spirit), blasphemy, heresy, lying (deceits), pride, greed, covetousness, occultism, idolatry, witchcraft, strife, despites, smoking,
drunkenness ( destroys the body which is the temple of God), stealing, fraud, evil companionship, etc. (Galatians 5:19, 1corinthains 6:9, Romans 1:29 – 32).
Consequences of living sinful lives: Sin alienates man from God, destroys relationship, and perverts thoughts, imaginations, speech and actions. It defiles, it paralyses spiritually and physically, disqualifies from kingdom blessings and eternal life. It attracts God`s wrath and corrupts fellowships, society and nation. Sin brings weaknesses and sickness, demonic attacks and oppression into the life of sinners. Sin brings afflictions, troubles, sorrows, disasters, calamities and woes. Sin hinders prayers. The wages of sin is death and ultimately torments in hell.
The penalty for sin has been fully satisfied in Jesus Christ. The sin of mankind was laid upon Him as He hung on the cross. He took the place of as many as are willing to accept His sacrifice. God will cancel and cast away their sins. They will be like a man without a past. Christ died for the whole world but not all will be saved. A gift is only beneficial when accepted.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.”(John 3:16.)
Pathway to true freedom and deliverance from sin includes:
? Acknowledge your sins
” He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy.”( Proverbs 28:13).
? Repent: Have a change of attitude towards sin.
? Confess your sins to God.
? Forsake all confessed sins.
? Receive Christ and appropriate the blood He shed for your cleansing by faith. Invite Him into your heart.
? Believe God`s promises of forgiveness.
Forgive yourself and others. Reconcile with all who have been hurt by your life of sin.
2. Association with the right kind of people
